A stunning performance of original music and dance linked by Arabic poetry and the testimonies of Syrians from Aleppo.

“Requiem for Aleppo” was a stunning performance of original music and dance linked by Arabic poetry and the testimonies of Syrians from Aleppo that was performed to an audience of 1500 people at Sadlers Wells theatre in London on 23rd April 2017 and simultaneously live-streamed to audiences in twelve other venues internationally.  It was created and produced by composer David Cazalet with choreographer Jason Mabama and a troupe of twelve dancers from nine different countries.

The aim was to remind audiences of the suffering of the people of Syria, to give voices to the people of Aleppo and to act as an ongoing vehicle through performance, social media and crowdsourcing for people to support what the UN has termed ‘the largest humanitarian crisis of a generation’.  The performance raised £70,000 for the charity Syria Relief and the social enterprise Techfugees that are providing direct support for Syrians affected by the conflict.  “Requiem for Aleppo” will be performed again at the Edinburgh Festival on 16th August, at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, and is planned to tour internationally.
